If you’ve got a baby on board, you’ve probably got a lot on your mind. You’re probably also really tired (like, really realllly tired). We don’t want to add another thing to your to-do list but we think it’s important to know that your teeth need some extra TLC during this wonderful life stage. And at Mint*d, we want to make it as easy as possible for you to do that.
The thing is, many people assume that gum disease and dental decay is simply part in parcel of pregnancy that goes away after childbirth – a misconception Mint*d dentist Leila Sarram constantly encounters. The truth is that regular hygiene visits during pregnancy can go a long way towards reducing dental disease. So it’s definitely worth keeping up with dental visits while you’re expecting. Plus, visiting Mint*d is a chance to get off your feet and listen to some relaxing music – our Bluetooth safety glasses mean you can choose your own tunes. Bliss!

Why it’s important

You’re probably a little more focused on your belly when you’re pregnant but your mouth needs some attention, too – not just for your sake, but for your bub, too.
Leila Sarram says pregnancy hormones can increase gum bleeding, which if ignored may weaken the tissues that support your teeth.
'Although bleeding gums during pregnancy is temporary, if left untreated it can potentially lead to gum disease, which has been linked to increase risk of premature birth and low birth weight,' she says.
'Frequent vomiting as a result of morning sickness can also contribute to premature tooth erosion and dental decay.'
